Matos on tactics, Klopp's influence, and taking Swans to top of the league

Vítor Matos’s appointment as Swansea City manager in November 2025 was initially met with skepticism, given his limited senior coaching experience—just 12 games in the Portuguese second division before joining the Swans. Yet under his leadership, the club has defied expectations, topping the Championship after 10 matches this season.

Matos’s tactical foundation draws heavily from his five-year tenure as an elite development coach under Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool, where he absorbed principles of high-intensity counter-pressing and team cohesion. Though Klopp’s influence is evident, Matos’s approach blends insights from stints at FC Porto, Shandong Taishan, and Red Bull Salzburg, where he served as Pep Lijnders’ assistant.

His priority upon arrival was restoring player confidence, transitioning to a disciplined back-four system, and fostering an aggressive, pressing style—both in possession and out. The result has been a squad that embraces risk, thrives on quick transitions, and plays with renewed belief, a philosophy shaped by his holistic understanding of individual and collective development.

At 38, Matos’s managerial journey spans 23 years across continents, but his adaptability has been key to Swansea’s early success. While his time at Liverpool instilled a love for pressing football, his broader coaching philosophy rejects rigid adherence to any single system.

Instead, he tailors tactics to the players’ strengths, ensuring the team’s identity remains fluid yet consistent. The shift from a fluctuating back-four or back-five to a settled 4-3-3 has provided stability, while the emphasis on aggressive regains and collective intensity has redefined the Swans’ attacking and defensive approach.

With the league lead within reach, Matos’s blend of tactical innovation and player-centric leadership is proving a masterstroke for a club once facing relegation fears.
