The unbeaten Pittsburgh program suffered a major blow when starting quarterback Mason Heintschel tore his ACL during a 35-33 victory against Virginia Tech. The sophomore signal-caller went down early in the third quarter following a scramble near the sideline and will miss the remainder of the campaign.
Prior to the injury, Heintschel had compiled 1,304 passing yards and 14 touchdowns across five contests to help the Panthers jump out to a 5-0 start. Following his departure, reserve quarterback Holden Geriner stepped in and completed 8 of 12 passes for 78 yards and a score to help seal the narrow win.
