Maryland fires DC Ted Monachino as Mike Locksley's future as coach remains in doubt

Maryland’s coaching staff has undergone a significant shake-up following a dismal start to the 2026 season. The Terrapins, now 2-5, fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino after their defense continued to underperform, ranking near the bottom of college football in total defense (83rd), pass defense (84th), rush defense (85th), and scoring defense (127th).

Head coach Mike Locksley, who made the move in hopes of stabilizing the unit during a bye week, now faces mounting pressure over his own future. With a 4-8 record over the past two seasons and a 2-20 Big Ten record since 2024, Locksley’s job security is increasingly uncertain, especially after failing to defeat a Power Five opponent in over a year.

Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will assume interim control of the defense moving forward, marking another test for a program struggling to regain its footing.
