Liverpool’s £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz has yet to deliver the expected impact nearly two years after his arrival, raising questions about his future at the club. The German midfielder has managed just seven goals and 11 assists in 56 appearances, with no contributions in Premier League matches against top-10 teams last season.
This season, his struggles have persisted, managing only one assist in seven games across all competitions, including a substitution against Manchester City in a 3-0 defeat where he was replaced by Trey Nyoni. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s recent signing Rayan Cherki, acquired for a fraction of Wirtz’s fee, has already made a significant impact at City with 16 goals and 18 assists in 65 appearances, including a decisive goal in the same match where Wirtz was subbed off.
Former Liverpool defender Steven Warnock criticized Wirtz’s inconsistent influence, noting his tendency to drift in and out of games without making a tangible difference. With key attackers Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai currently sidelined, Liverpool face a dilemma: whether to persist with Wirtz amid his underperformance or risk further instability by making a change ahead of a busy fixture schedule.
