Lions report card: Trenches thrive, boundaries struggle vs. Saints

The Detroit Lions opened their 2026 campaign at Ford Field with an adrenaline-filled 31-30 overtime triumph against the New Orleans Saints. Detroit built a commanding 21-point cushion behind a dominant rushing effort from Jahmyr Gibbs and relentless pressure up front from their defensive line.

However, a late breakdown on the perimeter allowed New Orleans to stage a furious comeback, ultimately sending the Week 1 clash into an extra session after an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt by the visitors.

While Gibbs starred on offense and the defensive trenches excelled, the Lions experienced turbulence elsewhere on the roster. Wideout Jameson Williams endured a difficult afternoon, while Detroit's defensive backfield struggled heavily in high-leverage moments down the stretch.

Despite surrendering their lopsided lead and nearly watching the contest slip away, the home team managed to recover in overtime to secure the season-opening victory.
