Detroit Lions defensive end DJ Wonnum has been fined $12,611 for committing a hip-drop tackle against Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett during last week’s game. The penalty marks the second time this season a Lions player has faced such a fine, following linebacker Jack Campbell’s $15,930 deduction for the same infraction.
Hip-drop tackles are classified as major fouls under new NFL rules, meaning repeated offenses could lead to suspensions. Players who commit three such violations in a season risk a one-game suspension, with other offenses in this category including horse collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks.
Notably, no penalty flag was thrown during Wonnum’s play, despite clear evidence of the foul. The Cardinals’ Elijah Higgins also received a fine of $20,411 for helmet use in the same game.
