San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan dismissed claims of any past friction with Dante Pettis following the veteran wide receiver's return to the franchise on a practice squad deal. Pettis initially joined the team as a second-round draft choice in 2018 before being released late in the 2020 season.
Shanahan explained that previous roster decisions were simply a matter of coaching rather than a personal feud, noting that the organization also attempted to re-sign the pass catcher during training camp. With multiple injuries impacting the receiving corps ahead of Sunday's fixture, Pettis could quickly find himself back on the field.
During his initial tenure with the organization, Pettis hauled in five touchdowns as a rookie followed by two scores during the 2019 campaign. The 49ers ultimately moved on from the wideout after his playing opportunities diminished, though he has since gained experience elsewhere.
The current roster shortages stem from Mike Evans dealing with a rib issue alongside KhaDarel Hodge missing practice due to a knee injury. Shanahan expressed confidence in the veteran as the team prepares to face the Denver Broncos.
