Legendary gridiron architect June Jones has passed away at the age of 73, as confirmed Thursday by his teaching organization. Renowned for popularizing the pass-heavy scheme that altered collegiate strategy, the former bench boss previously took the reins at Hawaiʻi in 1999 and immediately orchestrated a dramatic 9-4 turnaround after a winless prior campaign.
His tenure peaked during an unblemished 2007 run that captivated the region and ended with a Sugar Bowl appearance against Georgia. During his storied career, he also directed the SMU program from 2008 to 2014, while additionally working across alternative professional leagues such as the Canadian Football League and the XFL.
