Rookie right-hander Jonah Tong closed out his campaign on a high note by striking out nine batters and allowing just one earned run across five innings during a 7-1 victory against Washington. The twenty-three-year-old finished his second stint of the year with a 3.82 ERA in seven total appearances while cementing his place among a young core of internal starting pitching depth that also features Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Zac Thornton.
Manager Andy Green indicated that the youngster will likely open the upcoming campaign at Triple-A Syracuse to build further organizational depth, despite the player's personal ambition to secure an immediate spot in the major league rotation.
Green noted that building a championship-caliber roster requires having reliable depth options ready to contribute from the minor leagues throughout the year. The club also expects to return starters Tylor Megill from injury alongside established arms Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga, while potentially exploring outside additions during the winter.
Expressing strong long-term confidence in Tong's abilities, the skipper emphasized that the rookie's future outlook remains extremely promising even if immediate deployment plans do not match the competitor's personal goals for the spring.
