During a Saturday matchup against Oregon State, Colorado State head coach Jim Mora stripped defensive coordinator Tyson Summers of his play-calling responsibilities after the opposing offense scored touchdowns on their opening two possessions. Summers responded by walking off the field entirely, prompting Mora to clarify afterward that the assistant chose to depart on his own accord and is permanently separated from the university athletics program.
Associate head coach and defensive line coach Kenny McClendon stepped in to direct the defense for the remainder of the contest. Although McClendon's very first tactical call forced a turnover that quickly translated into a tying touchdown, the Rams ultimately suffered a decisive 56-26 defeat.
Summers had previously assumed defensive coordinator duties in 2025 and briefly held interim head coaching responsibilities following the mid-season dismissal of Jay Norvell.
