Jets defense takes a major step back versus Patriots after historic performance: ‘Tough to explain’

October 19, 2026

The New York Jets' vaunted pass rush, which dominated Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson last week with eight sacks, completely disappeared in a 26-19 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Despite the Patriots losing three offensive linemen—Morgan Moses, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Ben Brown—to injuries, Jets defensive end David Bailey and the unit failed to register a single sack against quarterback Drake Maye, who completed all of his passes.

Coach Aaron Glenn admitted the struggle was inexplicable, praising his front-four’s talent while acknowledging New England’s ability to adjust mid-game, particularly with Maye’s poise under pressure. ‘He’s a very savvy quarterback,’ Glenn noted, as Maye’s accuracy and mobility kept the Jets’ defense off-balance throughout the contest.

The Patriots’ ground game also shifted momentum late, with Braelon Allen leading early with 12 carries for 65 yards and two receptions. However, Allen’s impact faded in the second half, where he managed just five rushes for 13 yards as the Jets’ offensive line struggled to sustain drives.

Special teams also underperformed, with only kicker Jason Sanders (4-for-4 on field goals) providing consistency, while linebacker Kiko Mauigoa exited with a thigh injury. The Jets’ inability to capitalize on turnovers or contain New England’s dual-threat offense exposed defensive vulnerabilities heading into a critical stretch of the season.
