Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has successfully appealed two fines issued after his post-touchdown celebrations in Week 2, where he mimicked smoking and passing a substance to teammates. The NFL initially penalized Williams and his teammates for the gesture, despite Williams arguing that the act was not intended to be offensive and could be interpreted as referencing the legal status of marijuana in certain states.
The league’s ruling clarified that while alcohol-related celebrations remain permissible, any depiction of smoking or drug use is still prohibited. Williams also faced a separate $23,417 fine in Week 3 for an illegal helmet usage incident.
Appeals officer Derrick Brooks noted the reversal but cautioned Williams to ensure future celebrations align with professional standards, emphasizing the need for appropriate conduct on the field.
