Milwaukee Brewers slugger Jake Bauers delivered another masterful performance in the National League Championship Series, this time against San Diego Padres ace Blake Snell. Following a 12-pitch walk in a prior at-bat that had been hailed as the best of the NLCS, Bauers outdueled Snell with an 11-pitch duel that culminated in a game-tying, two-run home run.
Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner, relies on a deceptively simple but highly effective four-pitch arsenal—fastball, changeup, slider, and curveball—each designed to induce swings and misses. His fastball and changeup move inward against left-handed hitters, while his slider and curveball break away, with the latter being one of the most devastating breaking balls in baseball.
Despite missing significant time over the past three seasons due to injury, Snell’s 2023 season showcased his dominance, as all three of his secondary pitches posted whiff rates near 50%, placing his overall whiff rate in the 98th percentile among starters.
