Newly acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy addressed reporters following Friday's practice, admitting he was initially surprised by his unexpected trade from the Vikings.
Despite the whirlwind experience, the young signal-caller expressed gratitude for his time in Minnesota and enthusiasm for his fresh start with the Giants. New York pursued quarterback depth after losing Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the regular season, adding McCarthy alongside veteran Jameis Winston and Jake Haener.
Head coach John Harbaugh noted that the coaching staff is currently evaluating how to integrate their newest passer into the offensive playbook. While Winston is slated to start Sunday's matchup against the Cardinals, the team has yet to finalize its complete backup rotation as players continue learning the system.
McCarthy is using the transition as an opportunity to immerse himself in the playbook and connect with his new teammates.
