The New York Giants made a late-game gamble Sunday, inserting backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy into a 34-10 hole against the New Orleans Saints.
McCarthy responded with a fiery performance, leading three straight scoring drives and nearly cutting the deficit in half with 243 passing yards, a touchdown, and 25 rushing yards in his lone quarter. His standout play included a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Isaiah Likely, offering a glimpse of the offensive firepower the Giants desperately need after losing starter Jaxson Dart for the season.
Despite the effort, the Saints' defense held firm, and the Giants fell short in a game that underscored their quarterback instability. Starting quarterback Jameis Winston had struggled earlier, completing just 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while the offense managed only 10 points—a far cry from the Saints' 30.2-point-per-game defense.
McCarthy, who went 6-4 as a starter last season, flashed the kind of resilience that could be critical for a Giants team still searching for consistency at the position.
