UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has confirmed he will not defend his belt against Carlos Prates at UFC 336 in January, a decision driven by his desire to avoid competing during the holy month of Ramadan. The promotion instead announced that Prates will face Michael Morales for the interim title at the same event, with the victor set to challenge Makhachev for the unified championship later in 2027.
Makhachev explained his reasoning in an interview, noting that Prates had recently lost to Ian Machado Garry, a fighter Makhachev has already defeated, while Morales was waiting in line without an active fight. By allowing the two contenders to settle the matter between themselves, the champion believes the organization can identify the most deserving challenger.
Since Ramadan is scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027, Makhachev is unlikely to return to the octagon until the summer.
