How Alexander Zverev can guarantee world number one status at the Shanghai Masters

Alexander Zverev commenced his quest to secure the year-end top ranking at the Shanghai Masters with a straight-sets victory over Wu Yibing, winning 6-4, 7-6. The German star can mathematically guarantee finishing the season at the summit of men's tennis by advancing to the tournament semifinals, or alternatively if challengers Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton suffer elimination prior to that stage.

Zverev now advances to face Quentin Halys in the third round, having previously defeated the Frenchman three times earlier this season across different major events.
