Gubbins ton helps Hampshire build lead over Leics

Nick Gubbins struck an unbeaten 124 to guide Hampshire to 255-3 at stumps on day two at Grace Road, establishing a 225-run advantage against relegation rivals Leicestershire. The 32-year-old opener ended a Championship century drought lasting back to April of the previous year, sharing a 104-run opening stand alongside Felix Organ before Ian Holland trapped Organ lbw.

Facing a steep 32-point gap from safety heading into this penultimate fixture, Hampshire need the full 19 victory points to maintain any mathematical possibility of avoiding a first relegation to Division Two since 2014.

Earlier, Leicestershire resumed on 148-7 and pushed their total to 244, capturing a 30-run first-innings edge courtesy of half-centuries from Hamza Shaikh (63) and injury replacement Tom Scriven, who finished 53 not out after facing 70 balls. Scriven combined for 48 runs with Shaikh and another 41 alongside Ajaz Patel after Kyle Abbott had taken 4-58 for the visitors.

That lower-order resistance followed Hampshire's opening innings of 214, where Ben Brown hit an unbeaten 80 while Holland secured career-best figures of 6-38 and Gilchrist claimed 4-54.
