The Cincinnati Bearcats dominated key statistical categories in their Oct. 17 clash with West Virginia, yet still fell short in a 45-42 loss at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Despite leading six times and outgaining the Mountaineers in total yards (622-598) and rushing yards (233-134), UC’s late defensive struggles handed WVU the victory. Quarterback JC French IV threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns, while Cole Tabb rushed for 118 yards after replacing the injured Gi'Bran Payne.
However, West Virginia’s Michael Hawkins Jr. orchestrated a game-saving drive, including a 41-yard touchdown pass from the 2-yard line, sealing the upset despite both teams exceeding the over/under points total of 63.5.
Coach Scott Satterfield cited UC’s pass defense as the deciding factor, noting West Virginia capitalized on one-on-one opportunities while Cincinnati failed to secure crucial stops. The loss drops the Bearcats to 4-2 (1-2 Big 12), while WVU improves to 4-3 (1-3 Big 12).
Predictions for the game were largely off, with neither team’s rushing attack reaching 100 yards and Hawkins Jr. surpassing expectations with 464 passing yards and a 223.9 rating.
