Giants put J.J. McCarthy in for one play

The New York Giants made an early roster adjustment in their Week 1 matchup against Washington, inserting backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy into the game on the team’s first offensive drive.

McCarthy entered the field after Jameis Winston completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely on third-and-13, but his first snap—a quick throw to Darnell Mooney—resulted in a five-yard loss. A facemask penalty on the defense, however, allowed the Giants to keep the ball alive before Winston resumed his duties on the next play.

The unit later attempted a 50-yard field goal, but Dominic Zvada’s kick sailed wide, leaving Washington up 6-0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
