The Atlanta Falcons entered the NFL in 1966 with a bold, distinctive uniform design that immediately set them apart. Their debut look featured black jerseys with white numbers outlined in red, paired with white pants and the team’s signature red helmets adorned with a gold stripe—a detail added to avoid resembling the University of Georgia’s colors while still honoring Georgia Tech’s gold.
The away uniforms swapped to white jerseys with black numbers, maintaining the same striking red-and-black striping. This iconic early look, worn through 1970, became a fan favorite and was later revived as a throwback in 2009, proving its enduring appeal.
The uniforms also saw minor tweaks in 1968, removing the Falcons logo from the sleeves in favor of additional striping, though the core design remained unchanged for the franchise’s first five seasons.
By 1971, the Falcons introduced their first major uniform overhaul, replacing the black home jerseys with red ones while keeping the white numbers outlined in black. The updated look retained the red helmets and white pants, creating a cleaner, more streamlined design that defined the team’s identity throughout the 1970s.
Despite early struggles on the field, these uniforms helped establish the Falcons as a recognizable force in the league, with legendary players like Tommy Nobis and Claude Humphrey leaving their mark while wearing them.
