Looking back at archives from February 2018, Athletics Weekly previously highlighted both the creation of the Athletics World Cup and the rise of a young Josh Kerr. The short-lived international competition organized by UK Athletics at the Olympic Stadium ultimately lost nearly two million pounds due to low ticket attendance and scheduling clashes with the football tournament and Wimbledon finals.
Meanwhile, a twenty-year-old Kerr was laying the groundwork for his future record-breaking career by finishing behind fellow Scot Chris O'Hare at the Wanamaker Mile in New York. Coached at the time by Joe Franklin while attending the University of New Mexico, Kerr overcame a rocky initial transition period to find his footing against elite competition.
