Former Michigan coach Biff Poggi, now an analyst for the Big Ten Network, has issued a sharp assessment of Ohio State’s current roster, calling Ryan Day’s Buckeyes a more formidable opponent than last season. Poggi highlighted the Buckeyes’ deep passing threat, noting that Jeremiah Smith—ranked as the top player in college football—and quarterback Julian Sayin are now elite-level talents, forcing defenses to account for multiple offensive weapons.
Ohio State’s rushing attack, led by Ja’Kobi Jackson and Bo Jackson, also showed its strength with 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a recent win over Maryland. Beyond personnel, Poggi pointed to Day’s coaching record, emphasizing his 87-13 start through 100 games, a mark he described as unprecedented in modern college football.
The Buckeyes, now fourth in the national rankings, will face fifth-ranked Indiana (5-1, unbeaten) on October 17, a matchup complicated by Ohio State’s recent title win over Notre Dame and Indiana’s own history of beating the Buckeyes in the 2025 Big Ten Championship Game. Meanwhile, Michigan’s struggles under new coach Kyle Whittingham—including a 3-2 start and offensive stagnation—add urgency to the Wolverines’ upcoming showdown with Ohio State, especially given Poggi’s insider perspective on both programs.
