Former UFC lightweight standout Edson Barboza, 40, has officially stepped away from mixed martial arts competition after a storied career. However, the Brazilian grappler is far from ready to hang up his gloves entirely, as he has signed with Absolute Championship of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (ACBJJ) to continue competing in gi and no-gi tournaments, super fights, and mixed events.
Barboza’s transition marks a shift toward a new chapter in his athletic journey, one that keeps him active in the combat sports world beyond the octagon.
Meanwhile, other UFC veterans are making their own moves in the sport. Jose Aldo returned to action after a 17-month hiatus, facing Marlon Vera in a 10-minute grappling match at a recent event in Quito, Ecuador.
The bout ended in a submission-only draw, with both fighters showcasing their skills outside of traditional MMA. Elsewhere, Zabit Magomedsharipov has reportedly signed a multi-fight deal for his return to competition, while Court McGee issued a farewell statement following his retirement after a 16-year UFC career.
Former middleweight Sam Alvey, known for his charismatic persona, has also inked a deal with BKFC for bareknuckle boxing, adding another layer to the evolving landscape of combat sports.
