Drew Rasmussen dominated the New York Yankees on Saturday by carrying a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and matching the franchise postseason strikeout record with ten punchouts in a 1-0 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. Jonathan Aranda provided all the offense the home side required by launching a solo home run in the third inning off opposing starter Gerrit Cole.
Austin Wells finally broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the eighth by doubling off a middle-zone sinker, though his night ended poorly when a crisp relay from Victor Mesa Jr. and Taylor Walls to Junior Caminero caught him trying to stretch the hit into a triple despite warnings from third-base coach Luis Rojas.
Manager Aaron Boone later acknowledged the miscue as a costly misjudgment during a tightly contested playoff opener.
