Ethiopia’s Buze Diriba dominated the women’s race at the Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday, smashing the course record with a time of 2:16:12—nearly 40 seconds faster than the previous mark. Her personal best, which improved by over three minutes, also set a new Dutch all-comers’ record and propelled her into the world’s top 16 all-time marathoners.
Diriba’s victory came after she and defending champion Aynalem Desta led from the start, with Diriba pulling away decisively in the final 10 kilometers to win by nearly a minute. The race was run in wet conditions, with Diriba and Desta both posting personal bests, while British runner Chelsea Stokes finished 16th in 2:31:51, the top British finisher.
