Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has had two fines from his team’s Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills officially overturned after appealing the penalties. Williams was initially hit with a $14,926 fine for an illegal celebration and another $11,941 for taunting during the game.
In his appeal, Williams argued that his gestures—including one mimicking smoking—were not intended to be vulgar, citing that marijuana is legal in several states. The NFL’s appeals officer, Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks, agreed with Williams’ reasoning and rescinded both fines, though he urged the player to celebrate more professionally in the future.
The decision comes as part of a broader NFL crackdown on celebrations referencing drugs or alcohol, which has seen other players like Kyle Juszczyk and Jake Ferguson also have their fines reversed after similar appeals.
