Pat Cummins has dismissed concerns about revelations in Usman Khawaja’s upcoming autobiography, which will explore the 2018 ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket. The former Test captain, who will lead Australia’s opening match of the series against South Africa in Durban, said he had no apprehensions about the book’s potential disclosures, stating he had already discussed it with Khawaja.
The 2018 incident in Cape Town saw Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft banned after altering the ball’s condition, while Cummins and three other bowlers—Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon—denied prior knowledge, releasing a joint statement in 2021 affirming they only became aware of the tampering when it was broadcast live. Khawaja, who retired in January after playing all four Tests in 2018, will publish his memoir in November, though Cummins emphasized the controversy was long resolved and the team had since rebuilt its reputation over the past eight years.
