The Dallas Cowboys altered their backfield depth leading into their regular-season kickoff against the New York Giants. Malik Davis, who secured the backup role behind starter Javonte Williams after fending off Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah in training camp, sustained a serious hip injury during Friday's practice that required him to be carted off the field.
Dallas officially shifted Davis to injured reserve on Saturday, ending his availability for the upcoming contest and potentially the entire season as the lone Dallas player with an official designation on the final injury report.
To address the sudden vacancy at running back, the organization promoted Israel Abanikanda from the practice squad to the active roster. Abanikanda previously saw game action for Dallas during an August 15 exhibition matchup in Seattle, and he will now bolster an offense preparing for Sunday Night Football at MetLife Stadium.
