Cody Bellinger makes Red Sox pay with game-changing homer to help seal Yankees’ wild-card series win

Cody Bellinger crushed a decisive three-run home run in the sixth inning to propel the New York Yankees to a 9-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The win clinched the wild-card series for New York and advanced them to the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Boston coaching staff, led by Chad Tracy, had opted to intentionally walk Ben Rice with Trent Grisham on second base to face Bellinger instead, a decision that backfired when the star outfielder connected off reliever Garrett Whitlock. Aaron Judge and Wilyer Abreu were also referenced in the broader context of the matchup, while Willson Contreras provided an earlier home run for Boston.
