The Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, doubled down on his commitment to the struggling franchise amid a dismal 0-5 start, insisting his relentless work ethic stems from respect for the team’s players, organization, and supporters. With quarterback Justin Herbert ranking last in the NFL in total quarterback rating (26.6) and the offense averaging just 16.8 points per game—the third-lowest mark in the league—McDaniel emphasized that complacency has no place in the NFL.
Injuries have further crippled the unit, with eight offensive players either missing or limited in practice this week, including four rookies starting on the offensive line in Sunday’s loss to Denver. The Chargers’ defense, meanwhile, ranks 10th in yards allowed per game (311.6), offering little relief as they prepare to face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
McDaniel’s determination contrasts with the team’s dire performance, where Herbert has thrown just 937 passing yards (22nd in the league) while the offense has been hobbled by key absences, such as wide receivers Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Brenen Thompson. Despite the challenges, McDaniel rejected any suggestion of easing up, calling the idea of ‘trying harder’ later in the season an insult to his integrity and the team’s efforts.
His stance underscores the high stakes for both his job and the Chargers’ season, which remains winless after six games.
