Notre Dame’s bid to claim the No. 1 ranking in college football fell just short in a dramatic 28–24 loss to BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The Cougars’ electrifying offense, led by quarterback Bear Bachmeier, powered them to victory with four total touchdowns—two rushing, one passing, and another on a reception. BYU’s game-winning drive culminated in a 6-yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with 1:47 left, sealing the win after Notre Dame’s late push stalled on a failed end-zone catch by Jaden Greathouse under heavy pressure.
The Irish, who had taken a 24–21 lead late in the fourth quarter, saw their momentum falter after two missed opportunities, including a botched fake punt and a fumble on a punt return that led to field goals for BYU. Notre Dame’s struggles extended to the defensive side, as star lineman Boubacar Traoré was ejected early for targeting after a helmet hit on Bachmeier, and quarterback C.J.
Carr’s late drive ended with a lost fumble on a spike attempt. With Georgia’s upset loss to Auburn earlier in the day, Notre Dame’s defeat left Miami as the likely heir to the top ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.
