The Big Ten has acknowledged a critical officiating error in UCLA’s 17-15 upset victory over Oregon last weekend, marking the latest in a string of controversial calls this season. With 2:16 remaining, officials incorrectly placed the ball for Oregon’s two-point conversion attempt after a personal foul penalty, instead of moving it half the distance from the end of the Ducks’ previous run.
Oregon running back Jordon Davison had been stopped inches short of the end zone on the first try, and the misplaced spot cost the Ducks a chance to tie the game and potentially secure their fourth win of the season. The Big Ten confirmed the mistake in a statement, noting that the ball should have been positioned halfway to the goal line from the end of the first attempt, per NCAA rules.
This error follows another officiating blunder in the conference just one week prior, when Nebraska’s missed PAT attempt against Maryland was not revisited after a roughing-the-snapper penalty on the Terrapins. Oregon coach Dan Lanning previously admitted to a questionable decision earlier in the game on a failed two-point conversion but did not address the blown call in the fourth quarter.
