The Oakland Athletics have named Taylor Smith as their new President of Baseball Operations, ending a months-long search for leadership. Smith, who previously served as an assistant general manager for the Boston Red Sox, brings a fresh analytical approach to the role after rising through the ranks with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he worked in research and development before joining Boston in 2024.
His hiring follows the rejection of another candidate, Sam Fuld, and marks the first major outside hire for the Athletics in decades. Smith, still in his early 30s, will now face the challenge of rebuilding the team’s pitching staff, which has struggled in recent seasons, while also deciding the future of incumbent manager Mark Kotsay, who remains under contract through 2028.
With the team’s new Las Vegas ballpark still unproven, Smith has just weeks to assemble his front office and prepare for his first offseason in charge.
