Former professional defensive back Asante Samuel recently voiced strong criticism regarding a tactical choice made by the Colorado football program. During a matchup against Baylor in Waco, signal-caller Julian Lewis was kept in the shotgun formation on a critical fourth-and-one play rather than lining up directly under center.
The ensuing running play failed to convert, halting the drive and giving the ball back to the opposition. Samuel argued that offenses should return to traditional fundamentals in short-yardage situations to give quarterbacks and running backs a better chance to succeed.
Baylor capitalized immediately on the turnover, with DJ Lagway connecting with Gavin Freeman for a three-yard touchdown that extended their lead to 10-3. While Colorado utilized shotgun sets during earlier third-down conversions, including a successful effort by Micah Welch, their inability to convert on fourth down proved costly.
