UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has floated the idea of a joint retirement bout with Justin Gaethje, the reigning 155-pound titleholder, after both fighters conclude their respective careers. Volkanovski, who holds the belt at 145 pounds, suggested the concept during an interview, clarifying that he was not proposing their next fights be their final ones.
Instead, he envisioned a non-title superfight where both could retire together, allowing their respective divisions to reorganize afterward. With a combined 65 professional fights between them, the two have left an indelible mark on MMA history, and Volkanovski believes such a match would be a unique and compelling farewell to the sport.
He also noted that the UFC could accommodate the superfight without disrupting other championship pursuits, as vacating the belts would open opportunities for other contenders. The idea has gained traction, with Volkanovski now frequently asked about the possibility of making it a reality.
