Just over a week after suffering eight bone fractures in his face from a batted ball, Alex Bregman returned to the Chicago Cubs lineup for the start of their postseason schedule. Batting second and serving as the designated hitter, he took the field for the wild-card opener against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Craig Counsell opted to keep Bregman out of the defensive alignment as a precaution, allowing Pedro Ramírez to handle third base instead. Bregman previously avoided the injured list, returning late in the regular season after recovering from the September 20 incident caused by teammate Michael Busch.
