Scotland’s Women’s World Cup play-off against the Czech Republic will see fans return to the pitchside for the first time in 42 years, as alcohol sales are permitted in the West and East stands of Paisley’s Marbill Coaches Stadium. The Scottish FA has approved the move, framing it as a trial to assess how controlled alcohol consumption could enhance matchday safety and atmosphere.
The decision follows recent pilot schemes, including Aberdeen’s permanent licence for limited alcohol sales in designated concourse areas during lower-risk fixtures, and temporary fan zones at other clubs. With Scotland already leading 2-0 from the first leg, the home side is on the verge of advancing to the next play-off round, where Sweden—who top their group with a 5-0 lead over Lithuania—will likely await them.
Renfrewshire Council granted the exception for the women’s game, as existing legislation does not restrict alcohol consumption in view of the pitch for non-league matches. The Scottish FA has emphasized that the initiative aims to create a more inclusive and vibrant stadium experience, marking another shift away from the long-standing ban that had been in place since 1981.
