Abishek Porel granted bail in alleged rape case after spending over a month in jail: Report

Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has secured bail from a Chinsurah judicial bench following an incarceration period exceeding four weeks. The Delhi Capitals player was taken into custody in Hooghly district after a Karnataka-based medical student lodged a complaint at Mogra police station on June 23, accusing him of criminal intimidation and rape under a broken commitment to marry.

The legal action arose after the woman sought intervention from the Calcutta High Court, which instructed authorities to take Porel into custody and confiscate his electronic equipment to halt the potential sharing of private pictures. Law enforcement authorities framed charges invoking Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 69, 311, and 318, alongside provisions from the Information Technology Act's Sections 66 and 72, though the cricketer maintains that the accusations are completely untrue.

The complainant stated that the two had been partners for approximately three and a half years, journeyed overseas together, and had previously engaged in a confrontation involving local police roughly eighteen months earlier without formal charges. Porel, who broke into Bengal's senior first-class setup in the 2021-22 season, has compiled 32 red-ball appearances and 23 50-over matches for his state side.
