As Penn State prepares to face a relatively unfamiliar adversary in the Big Ten this week, attention turns to the tenure of Northwestern leader David Braun. Over a span of three seasons, Braun has accumulated an overall record of 21-20, maintaining a 1-1 mark against Penn State, a 0-9 record versus ranked opponents, and 11-16 within the conference.
He took over a tumultuous program following the departure of Pat Fitzgerald and immediately orchestrated a historic 2023 campaign, lifting the Wildcats from a 1-11 mark to an 8-5 finish. That six-game improvement stands as the largest single-season turnaround in the history of college football, earning him the Bear Bryant Newcomer of the Year honor along with a bowl victory.
Braun's short tenure has also featured notable upsets, including a road victory over Wisconsin that halted the longest active road winning streak in the nation. Last season on October 11, 2025, his squad secured a stunning win over Penn State at Beaver Stadium, a contest that resulted in an injury to quarterback Drew Allar and the subsequent dismissal of head coach James Franklin.
Now, Braun prepares for another clash against the Nittany Lions, this time visiting the newly opened home venue for his program.
