The San Francisco 49ers have built a reputation for high-impact midseason trades under head coach Kyle Shanahan, often addressing critical gaps in their roster. One of their most notable moves came in October 2017, when they acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in exchange for a second-round draft pick.
At the time, Garoppolo was seen as a potential long-term solution after serving as Tom Brady’s backup and briefly stepping in during Brady’s suspension in 2016. The 49ers, however, were primarily dealing with an uninspiring quarterback room featuring Brian Hoyer and rookie C.J.
Beathard, who was starting in place of Hoyer. The trade was initially viewed as a short-term fix, with Shanahan expected to pursue Kirk Cousins in the following offseason.
Garoppolo’s arrival accelerated when Beathard suffered a season-ending injury in Week 12, thrusting him into the starting role and setting the stage for his eventual four-year tenure with the team.
