A.J. Ewing’s home run give Mets win over Nationals, Tong finishes strong

The New York squad overcame a quiet start to defeat Washington 5-1 as A.J. Ewing launched a three-run dinger in the seventh frame.

Ronny Mauricio followed with back-to-back long balls, adding a solo shot in the seventh and a two-run blast in the final inning while batting from the right side. Jonah Tong delivered a solid final outing of the year across five innings, permitting only one run and three hits while retiring nine batters via strikeout.

Brett Baty manned shortstop while Francisco Lindor served as designated hitter, with Baty later reaching on an error by Nasim Nuñez to help manufacture an insurance run. Manager Andy Green acknowledged that Tong has not secured a rotation spot for the upcoming 2027 campaign, though the hurler wrapped up his major league action with a 3.82 ERA.

Relief arms Dedniel Nuñez, Nate Lavender, Devin Williams, and Tobias Myers combined to toss four scoreless frames without surrendering a single hit as the team prepares for its final fixture of the season.
