Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a recall to India's T20 international setup after an absence of nearly four years, following a sequence of events highlighted by selectors. The 36-year-old seamer was selected for the upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand, which features five T20 matches alongside three ODIs and a pair of Test fixtures.
His last international appearance in the shortest format occurred in November 2022 against New Zealand in Napier.
Three primary factors underpinned his return to national duties, beginning with his stellar production for Royal Challengers Bengaluru across multiple Indian Premier League campaigns. After capturing 17 wickets during their title-winning run in 2025 following his acquisition for 10.75 crore rupees, he spearheaded their attack again in 2026 with 28 scalps at an average of 17.89 as they successfully defended the trophy against Gujarat Titans.
Furthermore, he maintained fierce domestic consistency through standout spells in competitions like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and a four-wicket haul conceding just 10 runs in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League playoffs. Finally, team management factored in workload preservation for spearhead Jasprit Bumrah alongside the swing-friendly conditions expected in New Zealand.
