ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit criticized Notre Dame’s schedule ahead of their upcoming road matchup against No. 8 BYU, calling it unfair that the Fighting Irish face only two challenging games this season.
The Irish, currently ranked No. 3, will also host No.
3 Miami at home and have already dominated three Big Ten opponents, outscoring them by 84 points. Herbstreit acknowledged BYU and Miami as tough tests but argued that top programs like Alabama and Ohio State face far stiffer competition.
The Cougars, a perceived College Football Playoff contender, will pose a significant defensive challenge in Provo, Utah, where Notre Dame’s offense—led by quarterback CJ Carr—will need to overcome a hostile crowd and a strong BYU defense. Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s 41-13 win over Wisconsin now stands out even more, as the Badgers have since improved to 4-1.
The Irish’s upcoming game against No. 24 SMU on November 21 could also provide a meaningful test, though Herbstreit suggested BYU is the more immediate hurdle to prove their legitimacy in a stacked season.
