Ohio State’s College Football Playoff hopes remain strong despite a tough stretch, as analyst Josh Pate forcefully rejected the idea that a potential loss to Indiana this weekend could derail their chances. The Buckeyes, currently ranked No.
4, have already weathered a narrow setback at Texas and dominated Maryland (45–16) in their most recent outing, improving to 5–1. Their path forward includes a grueling slate of road games against Indiana (No.
5), USC, and Nebraska, along with home matchups against Oregon, Northwestern, and Michigan. Pate emphasized that Ohio State’s demanding schedule—ranked as the most difficult remaining in the nation—should shield them from exclusion, even if they falter against the Hoosiers.
He framed their road win over Iowa as proof of the team’s ability to compete against elite opponents, arguing that the playoff committee must consider the quality of their opponents rather than just win-loss records.
The Buckeyes’ defensive standout, Eddrick Houston, also made headlines after his helmet was removed during the Maryland game, a moment that underscored the physicality of their recent performances. While Pate acknowledged the uncertainty of the playoff landscape, he warned against overlooking Ohio State’s résumé, calling any potential snub ‘a dereliction of duty’ for the selection committee.
With their next challenge looming, the Buckeyes’ ability to sustain their momentum will be critical in securing their place among the 12-team playoff field.
