'Our roots are Man Utd' - but FC United ethos 'more important than ever'

FC United of Manchester striker Adam Le Fondre spent part of his Tuesday session working with the club’s academy players on a 3G pitch near their 4,900-capacity Broadhurst Park stadium. The Northern Premier League side, which operates in partnership with Manchester College to balance football development with education, aims to create pathways for young players—even if their futures lie far from the Premier League, where Le Fondre once scored 14 goals in a single season.

His involvement reflects the club’s commitment to grassroots initiatives, a stark contrast to the commercialized ethos of the Premier League club that inspired its founding 21 years ago, when a group of Manchester United fans formed FC United as an alternative to protests against the Glazer family’s ownership and the club’s mounting debt. This weekend, while Manchester United manager Michael Carrick seeks a crucial win at Leeds, FC United travel to Altrincham for an FA Cup fourth qualifying round match that could yield £25,000 in prize money.

Chairman Nick Boom emphasized the club’s enduring ties to Manchester United’s heritage, from traditions to shared history, while also highlighting its growing independence as a community-focused entity. With plans to expand solar power at Broadhurst Park—potentially saving £4,000 annually—the club continues to balance financial sustainability with its mission to offer affordable, accessible football, including a £5-a-month membership initiative for fans to co-own the club.

A recent £5,000 donation from a supporter underscores the grassroots support driving FC United’s vision, particularly as it prepares to face Bury in a Boxing Day clash likely to draw a large crowd.
