India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill delivered a sharp, viral-worthy response when asked about the team’s preparations for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. Gill, who has not featured in India’s T20I squad since December 2025, shot down the question with a blunt remark in Hindi, clarifying his exclusion from the format.
His last T20I appearance came during a match against South Africa, and he has since been omitted from the squad, including the 2026 T20 World Cup, as competition for opening spots intensified. Meanwhile, the current T20I team, which includes players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, returned from Japan after winning gold at the 2026 Asian Games, where India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final.
Gill, however, remains a key figure in India’s longer formats, leading the team in Tests and ODIs and recently guiding them to a 2-1 ODI series victory over the West Indies. His standout performance in the series included an unbeaten 223 in the second ODI, earning him Player of the Series honors with 334 runs across three matches.
The BCCI has also indicated a preference to avoid overburdening Gill with multiple formats while he continues to excel in Tests and ODIs.
