Six weeks after Hurricane Lowell devastated Kauai with sustained winds, torrential rain, and towering waves that nearly toppled a live meteorologist, the island’s golf courses are reopening one by one. The storm, which struck on September 7–8, left widespread destruction—including power outages, downed trees, and a fatality on Oahu when a fallen tree struck a homeless man.
Over 32,000 customers across Hawaii remained without electricity as cleanup efforts began, with Governor Josh Green warning that Kauai’s recovery would take months. Now, all five courses under Go Golf Kauai’s management have reopened, though some areas remain under restoration.
Poʻipu Bay Golf Course, a rugged Robert Trent Jones Jr. design along ocean bluffs, sustained only minor damage and is fully operational.
Puakea Golf Course, famous for its “Jurassic Park” filming locations, reopened on September 12 with perimeter cleanup ongoing but no impact on play. Princeville Makai Golf Club, another Jones Jr.
layout, lost over 200 trees but reopened on September 29 after clearing debris from its North Shore corridors. The Ocean Course at Hokuala, designed by Jack Nicklaus, offers Hawaii’s longest stretch of oceanfront holes and is now open, while Wailua Golf Course, a historic 1930s seaside layout, gradually reopened its holes by mid-October, with its driving range still closed due to lingering storm damage.
