During Jacksonville's dominant twenty-eight point victory over New England on Sunday, quarterback Trevor Lawrence made a surprising choice during the fourth quarter. Instead of walking into the end zone for an easy touchdown on a run from the sixteen yard line, he dropped to one knee to burn game clock.
Although more than eight minutes remained, the Patriots called a timeout immediately following the play, and running back Bhayshul Tuten found the end zone on the very next snap anyway.
Following the game, the Jaguars signal-caller acknowledged that going down was likely unnecessary given the remaining time on the clock. He admitted that he probably should have just scored immediately, though he joked that the decision at least allowed his teammate to get some statistics.
The play drew considerable online attention from fantasy sports players and bettors who had wagers on him to score a touchdown during the matchup.
