Following a hard-fought five-match T20I series victory against the Kiwis, the Indian national cricket squad under Shreyas Iyer shifted focus to upcoming red-ball fixtures. During the post-match media interaction, head coach Gautam Gambhir admitted he currently lacks clarity regarding the fitness and arrival schedule of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

Pant was previously expected to join the squad ahead of the upcoming Test matches following a left-side strain, wrist issues, and shoulder concerns sustained earlier during the Irani Cup. Although he was selected in the touring squad with an asterisk pending fitness clearance from the medical team, medical precautions and a delayed recovery have left his availability for the opening Test uncertain.
